Royal celebration of 150 years of Reader ministry

The Queen’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, joined more than 600 lay Readers at a service in London last week to celebrate 150 years of Reader Ministry. Prince Philip was the guest of honour at All Soul’s Langham Place, in London, for the service which was led by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. The Preacher was the Bishop of Sodor and Man.

Churches throughout England have responded to a call from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York for a “great wave of prayer” in the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday for the re-evangelisation of England. Dubbed, Thy Kingdom Come, the week will see 24/7 prayer rotas, open prayer times and special services.

Archbishop criticises minimum wage re-brand

An increase of 50 pence per hour in the national minimum wage that employers in the UK must pay their workers has been welcomed by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. But while welcoming the increase, Dr Sentamu has criticised the British finance minister, George Osborne, for branding the increase as a new Living Wage.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have called for a “great wave of prayer” for the evangelisation of England. In an “unprecedented step”, Justin Welby and John Sentamu have written to every parish priest in the Church of England, inviting churches across the country to take part in the focused prayer initiative in the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday.
